I have never known life without dogs. When I was growing up we always had the ‘family’ dogs to play with, to cuddle and to comfort us if we ever felt sorry for ourselves and what comforters they were!
My parents held the Affix of ‘Swanmount’ when I was a child and occasionally bred Cocker Spaniels. I started showing dogs in the early 1990’s and my Affix of ‘Shandlmain’ was taken out in 1997, I added my husband Mark as a joint interest in my Affix in 2011.
I show the dogs at both Championship and Open Level and I am passed by the UK Kennel Club to award CC’s in both Smooth and Rough Collies.
I was due to award CC’s for Smooth Collies for the first time in July 2020 at National Working and Pastoral Breeds Championship Show, but along with many others during 2020, this show was unfortunately cancelled due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, I have now been contracted again for the same show for 2022 (subject to KC approval) and I am also contracted to give CC’s in Rough Collie Bitches at London & Provincial Championship Show in November 2022 (subject to KC approval).
I held the position of Treasurer of East Anglian Collie Association from 2010 but resigned this position April 2017. I am a Member of the Committee of Smooth Collie Association of Great Britain and have been appointed the Kennel Club Breed Education Coordinator for Smooth Collies, my husband Mark was a Committee Member on East Anglian Collie Association until he too resigned in 2019.
In 2012, we were lucky enough to be able to add to our Rough Collies our first Smooth Collie, from the famous German Kennel ‘Jack Mack’s’ and clever and skilled Gudrun Hartman. We had been interested in Smooth Collies for many years, but always seem to miss out on the UK Smooth Collies being a vulnerable breed, whenever we were in a position to be able to have a Smooth Collie there were no UK Smooths around, so we made the decision to import from Gudrun a ‘Jack Mack’s’ Smooth Collie, to help diversify the gene pool in the UK as well by bringing in fresh blood.
The first attempt failed and our second attempt nearly also after an accident I had at Paignton Championship Show whilst handling another exhibitor’s dog and injuring my leg, might have put our plans on the back boiler again but for Nick and Anne Smith coming to the rescue, so I decided that we would offer our imported Smooth in partnership with Nick and Anne as a way of thanks for making my dream come true.
So we evolved for a while into Shandlmain Rough AND Smooth Collies until an operation on my shoulder prevented me from being able to groom the Rough Collies any longer, so now we concentrate on Smooth Collies only.
In May 2016 we have bred our very first litter of Smooth Collies and retained the only bitch puppy and also a dog.
We have imported a very promising tri colour male Smooth Collie who will be campaigned in the show ring, Eton has to date done extremely well at shows attended,and won his UK Stud Book Number by winning Dog Reserve CC at Windsor Championship show in 2019 and Dog Reserve CC at Crufts 2020.
We will continue to campaign him throughout the UK (information on Eton’s wins on the page dedicated to Smooth Collies). Eton has also successfully produced 5 litters of puppies to date and stands at Stud to approved and tested bitches only, We have bred both Rough and Smooth Collies that have won CC’s and Res CC’s in the UK and abroad.
We continue to campaign some of our Smooth Collies on the show circuit in the UK whilst others stay at home as pets.
